Benefits of Lemon Water

by | Jan 18, 2018 | Nutrition

Sour and strong, lemons are citrus fruit that typically aren’t enjoyed by simply cutting them in half and then biting into them. However, they are known to have several health benefits, and health enthusiasts have taken to adding lemon to their water in order to reap the benefits.

Here are three quick reasons for why you should consider drinking lemon water too:

Vitamin C

One notable advantage from consuming a lemon’s juice includes acquiring vitamin C. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, lemon juice from one lemon provides 18.6 milligrams of vitamin C, and Mayo Clinic states that 65-90 milligrams of vitamin C per day is recommended for the average adult. By getting sufficient amounts of vitamin C, your chances of developing cardiovascular disease or scurvy are reduced. Lemon juice also contains several minerals, such as potassium, phosphorus and magnesium.

Odor Neutralizer

Lemon water can also help reduce bad breath. Lemon helps stimulate saliva, therefore, preventing a dry mouth, which can lead to bacteria buildup and bad breath.

Gives Water a Different Taste

For those who are looking to change up the taste of water, adding lemon can be a great solution. This can be a great idea for parents who have kids that think the taste of water is “boring” or “flavorless.”

If you’re considering drinking lemon water, then try drinking it through a straw. The citric acid found in lemon juice can have negative effects on your teeth’s enamel, but the beverage is still a healthier alternative to juice or soda!
